Steps for Creating a Construction Contract {{ currentPage ? currentPage.title : "" }}

Having a contract with clients in the construction industry is important as it can protect you from certain liabilities while also giving your clients peace of mind. Thankfully, you don’t have to be a legal expert to draw up contracts in construction, and you can probably find a construction contract template online to work from.

If you’re new to construction contracts, below are some steps to take to create a solid contract that can offer both you and your client protection:

Include Personal Details

The first step in creating your contract is to include the personal details that pertain to your company and the client. These include your company’s name, address, and phone number as well as the client’s name, address, and phone number. Don’t forget to include other forms of contact, like email addresses.

Include the Project Details and Scope

You’ll also want to include as many details about the project as possible, but you also want to make sure you include the scope of the work. This means that you’ll want to define what is expected of both parties so that a project doesn’t continue to expand on and on.

For example, your contract may state that your company agrees to build a house, but then the client may want gutters added on. Your contract should clearly state your obligations as they pertain to the project so that the client’s expectations are set and met.

Have a Signature Section

You will also want to have a dedicated place on each page of the contract for signatures. If you use a construction contract template, most will include a line for this. The reason you want a signature on each page is so that you have documentation of the client’s agreement to your terms throughout the contract.

If only the last page is signed, the client could claim that they were not aware of other terms on other pages. There should also be a space for you or your company’s representatives to sign, and you might also consider having witnesses sign as well.
