A summary of what a Bird is.

Red cardinal

Birds are a group of warm-blooded vertebrates.  They are characterized by feathers, toothless beaked jaws, the laying of hard-shelled eggs, a high metabolic rate, a four-chambered heart and a strong lightweight skeleton.  There are about ten thousand living species.  Their offspring are hatched from eggs.  They have wings whose development varies according to species.  Their bodies are varying in color.  The digestive and respiratory systems of birds are uniquely adapted for flight.  Some bird species of aquatic environments have further evolved for swimming.
