Understanding How Abortion Saves Lives {{ currentPage ? currentPage.title : "" }}

Abortion has always been a hot-button topic, but the recent overturning of Roe vs. Wade has put it back at the forefront of public consciousness. Anti-abortion laws are sweeping the country, and lawmakers continue to fight against freedom of choice. But abortion goes beyond choice. It's a matter of life and death.

Continuing this fight for everyone who has a uterus nationwide is about more than knowing how to support abortion rights. It's about fighting disinformation and showing how abortion protects the lives of those with a uterus and those who rely on them daily. Here are a few ways that abortion can save lives.

Abortion and Maternal Mortality

The opposition leans heavily on the lives of the unborn. But research continues to show that banning abortion only increases maternal mortality rates. It's a life-saving procedure that can help those facing dangerous pregnancies.

Countries with strict abortion laws have higher maternal mortality rates, and it's not long until the United States joins them. With legal abortion, patients can work with their doctors to make this difficult decision. Physicians are free to use their best judgment and save a person’s life without fear of prosecution.

Abortion and Suicide

With abortion bans, uterus owners have to make more challenging decisions when faced with unwanted pregnancies.

Unfortunately, some people contemplate suicide because it's their only option. When an unwanted pregnancy threatens their career and future, they don't see a way out other than suicide. Take El Salvador as an example. When the country banned abortions, suicide became the leading cause of death in those who were pregnant.

Increased Illegal Abortions

Bans do not stop abortions. They still happen. The difference is that those who have a uterus have to resort to riskier procedures. So-called "back-alley abortions" were a growing problem before the passing of Roe vs. Wade. Now that the landmark decision has been overturned, many believe they will become commonplace again.

People will risk their lives to terminate unwanted pregnancies. Sadly, many will die or experience life-long issues because of them.

How to Support Abortion Rights

The rights of everyone with a uterus were unequivocally damaged, putting America decades behind other developed nations. The fight isn't over. The best thing you can do is support abortion funds and independent clinics in any way you can. Be vocal, be loud, and let your voice be heard.
