What is Kratom?

Kratom is a herbal extract, and is indigenous to the Southeast Asian countries of Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, and Thailand. Documented records reveal that the Southeast Asian natives used Kratom as a herbal medicine in the 19th century. It is still popular in this part of the world.

Kratom is taken from the Mitragyna speciosa leaves, a plant that belongs to the coffee family. A traditional way to consume Kratom was to chew the leaves. With advancement in technology and the growing popularity of Kratom, it is available as capsules, tea dips, oils, and in powdered forms.

What is Kratom extract?

Kratom extract is the concentrated form derived from powder or leaves. The extract is obtained from Kratom alkaloids. They are just a type of Kratom that is potent and give a strong dose of Kratom strain.

Kratom extract comes in three forms:

  • Powder – concentrated from powder

  • Tincture – liquid form

  • Resin – thick paste form

A common way to make the extract is from Kratom powder; the other is from Mitragyna speciosa leaves. It is done by boiling the leaves or powder, and taking out the necessary alkaline. The liquid is strained to separate any solid particles present in it. It is then left for cooling. Once the water evaporates, the process starts to remove moisture until a dark paste remains.

The derived gummy substance is now dried and turned into hard clumps. The next step is to grind it into a fine powder. It can be processed to further produce kratom products, including oil, tea, or kratom extract.

Why Use Kratom Extract Over Kratom Powder?

New users may get confused whether to use Kratom extract or Kratom powder since both look similar due to their fine texture. Alkaloids in Kratom extract are more concentrated than its powder form.

Let’s look at the basic differences between the two forms. Kratom extract appears darker than Kratom powder. Quite often, extracts have a stronger smell than the powder. Extracts are usually listed with a 2:1 ratio.

Kratom extract is preferred over its powder counterpart because it works with a smaller dosage.

How to Make Kratom Extracts

There are three ways to make Kratom extracts; each procedure resulting in different potencies. The lowest concentrate is made by immersing kratom in water. Water-based extracts have moderate potencies. The top kratom extract is made with resin.

Method 1 – Tea Extraction

The simplest extract is made by immersing tea. This is hassle-free, and the quickest way to gain kratom’s alkaloids. On the flip side, kratom tea has a very light strain, unless it’s dipped for a long time. Once the tea is made, it can be heated for concentration. The result however, remains a moderate dose.

For the ones willing to experiment, try dipping several kratom teas into a singular extract before heating the water. Just remember not to bring the water to a boiling point as it can lead to the breaking of Kratom alkaloids.

Method 2 – Water-based extraction

Raw Mitragyna speciosa leaves are softened in a mixture of ethanol and water. Lemon juice or citric acid are added to act as preservative. The extract is tested for pH acidity. It is put in a tinted bottle after giving a generous round of shake, and put away in a dark place for about 14 days. The mixture is then strained, and left for evaporation. The extract transforms into a thick potion, and is ready for storage.

This method yields a better concentrated Kratom strain. This process is followed for making most of the liquid Kratom extracts.

Method 3 – Resin extraction

Resin extraction is different from the previous two. Extract made by this method can get the most potent dose. It can also be stored for a longer time due its higher concentration. It is important to remember that no matter what Kratom extract is made, it should be put in tinted airtight bottles, and stored away from sunlight and strong smell.

Where to Find Kratom to Make Kratom Extracts?

Differentiating between Kratom powder and Kratom extract can be difficult for an inexperienced user. To prepare homemade Kratom extracts, it’s advisable to procure Kratom with clear labeling.

Also, sticking to the same seller, brand, and strain while buying Kratom can assure consistency. Choosing a seller with reliable knowledge of Kratom ensures that you get pure product without any fear of contamination.
