When you start looking for student housing abroad, you find a number of options. One of the popular options is shared accommodation. There are several benefits for you as an international student of living in a shared residence. First, you get one or more companions in your residence. Besides, you can find some residences at low prices since the rents are split among all the residents.
Shared accommodations can also be found in different types. Some of them are completely shared whereas, in some, students can find their private spaces.
Below, you will read some of the types of shared student residences around the world.
Shared Rooms

Shared rooms are occupied by multiple residents. Many of the shared rooms accommodate two residents. On the other hand, there are several others, in which, three, four, or sometimes, more residents can live. These rooms may either have double beds where two residents can sleep or single beds for each resident. If you get a room assigned to three persons then you may also get one double bed and one single bed.
In the shared rooms, all the units are shared, such as the kitchen, living room, and bathroom.
Shared Studios
Studio is a type of student accommodation, in which a single large space is provided to residents. In this big space, students can find a living area, a study area with a study table & chair, a sleeping area with a bed, an open kitchen area, etc. Bathrooms are attached to the studios.
Studios come available in single-occupancy and double-occupancy categories. A double-occupancy studio is shared by two residents. Larger beds are provided to residents in the shared studios.
Shared Apartments with Private Bedrooms
You can get shared apartments with private bedrooms if you are willing to get an accommodation where you could get your private space but also some housemates. You may either get an ensuite bathroom with your bedroom or you may get the common bathrooms in the apartment shared by all the residents.
Kitchens and living rooms in the apartments are shared by all the residents. These areas remain the meeting places for residents. In the living room, you can have fun with other residents, talk to them on different topics, discuss your course material if you find housemates with the same course or similar subjects, watch television together, have meals together, and more. In kitchens, residents can prepare meals together and talk to each other.
Shared Flats with Private Ensuite Rooms

This option is very much identical to the above-mentioned one. Students get a private ensuite room where they can enjoy privacy but living rooms and kitchens are shared by all the residents of the flat. Residents get ensuite bathrooms in ensuite rooms.
Apartments with Shared Bedrooms
Many apartments in different parts of the world offer shared bedrooms to students. These apartments are also similar to “shared apartments with private bedrooms” with the difference that one bedroom is shared by two residents in these types. Here also, kitchens and living rooms are shared by all the residents of an apartment.
Students may either find attached bathrooms with bedrooms or they may have to use the shared bathrooms in the apartments. But, in case you get an attached bathroom, you will have to share it with your roommate in your bedroom.
Shared Flats with Private Non-Ensuite Rooms
These flats are very much similar to “shared flats with ensuite rooms”. Here also, you find your private room but shared kitchens and living rooms. The only difference you find here is that you don’t find an ensuite bathroom in your room and you have to use the shared bathrooms available in your apartment.
Shared Townhouses with Private Rooms
Townhouses are offered by some accommodation properties. Townhouses have their own patterns so they can be of any type. In terms of the number of occupancy, many townhouses are similar to shared apartments with private rooms. A townhouse may either have shared bathrooms or each room may have their attached bathrooms. Many areas in these townhouses are common for all the residents.
Closing Notes
The above-mentioned ones are some options of shared student accommodations among which you can select as per your preference. Some more types may be available in a few accommodation properties that you can find after you start searching for a student residence.
Some amenities are provided to students in most of these accommodations. For example, you can find study desks and chairs in most of the units. Wardrobes and other storage spaces are also available for you where you can keep your clothes and other assets. A large number of residences are equipped with Wi-Fi internet connections.
There is no doubt that all these accommodations provide you a comfortable lifestyle.
