In this article, we will outline six key things that you can do to help you achieve clarity when writing an essay. Armed with this knowledge, you will be able to tackle your essay with confidence and success!

Short and Concise Sentences

Writing an essay can be as creative as writing a book. But academic writing rarely talks about things that are made up. And facts don't always need to be shown in a bright and colourful way.

Also, keep in mind that when you write an essay, you are answering a question. You are not showing how weird you are.

The easiest thing to do is to find the sentences with the most words. The ones with more than 9 words are the wordy ones. Try putting their meaning in 7 words or less. Then try to write a sentence in 5 that says the same thing.

So, if you can, try to cut it down. Still, it's fine if you can't get your point across in this short space. Your essay won't fail because of one or two long sentences. Just make sure not all your sentences are a mile long.

Avoid spelling and grammar mistakes

Literacy is always required, but not because it teaches people to never break made-up rules. Again, it needs to be there to make things clear. Even if you make mistakes in your essay, it might still be easy to understand.

But the readers will find the parts that don't make sense, which will make them think about what they've read. And no one writing an essay wants those kinds of breaks.

Make your paragraphs shorter

It's hard to read a long paragraph, especially if it has more than one idea. Try breaking up your essay's longer paragraphs into smaller ones. You can still connect them with words that go from one to the next. But if you use more blocks, your reader will be able to tell when you're starting a new thought.

Don't use vague language.

Modern and postmodern literature are known for their ambiguous descriptions and conclusions. In an essay, a student has to answer a question and come up with a way to solve the problem that was given. Almost every essay topic is a problem that needs your advice on how to solve it.

And you can't just think of it as a half problem. It's either a hard case or a normal one that won't hurt anyone. Your reader needs to know what you mean. And if you don't explain your idea in a way that makes sense to your audience, you need to do more work.

Don't make sudden changes in your tone

The tone of an essay might seem less important than what it says. Yet, it plays a significant role.

  • How you talk shows how you feel about the things you're studying.

  • Highlights things you think are important for your readers to remember

  • Draws attention to interesting parts that might make your readers even more interested

  • Expresses feelings and affects how your readers feel after seeing them; affects your readers' subconscious.

It is hard, but not impossible, to choose one tone for your essay so that it is clear. The first thing you have to decide when writing an essay is whether you will be formal or casual.

When you talk about different things, remember that you can change your tone. For example, one object might give you hope, while another might not seem useful, so you act like you don't care.

But don't change the way you talk in general. You can't, for example, be happy at the beginning and very sad at the end. Such a big change will throw off your reader and hurt their understanding.

Use common synonyms

There are words like interiorization, the significator, disposition, etc. And many more high-level words like these. But why write "disposition" when "tendency" works just as well? What about the word "lean"? You can also say "preference." That depends on what's going on.

We're lucky to live in a time when we can get the best dictionaries without leaving our rooms. So, you don't have to spend centuries trying to find the right word. But keep in mind that this only works if your professor doesn't want you to use those hard words. But even in this case, you can put the term next to a simpler word that means the same thing.
