Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product made by crushing down hardwood or softwood into wood fibres, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming it into panels by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF is generally denser than plywood. It is made up of wood fibres, but can be used as a building material similar in application to plywood. It is stronger, and more dense, than particle board.
Characteristics
It is a dry-processed fibreboard manufactured from wood fibres, as opposed to veneers or particles, and is denser than plywood and particleboard. MDF has an even density throughout and is smooth on both sides. MDF is reconstituted into wood sheets in a variety of widths and lengths.
The MDF board is also available as pre-laminated or smooth. Most of the MDF furniture that we see in furniture stores is made from pre-laminated MDF boards.
THE KEY APPLICATION AREAS OF MDF:
1. Heeled shoes and lasts
2. Laminate flooring substrate
3. Embossed panels for wall cladding
4. Kitchen blinds
5. Used in the manufacture of doors.
6. Decorative display panels
7. Rail cushion base
8. Automotive interior panels
9. Gifts & Trophies
10. Toys
