Gym Dress Codes {{ currentPage ? currentPage.title : "" }}

Going to the gym is great for your body and mind; many people also find it a fun and rewarding experience. If you’re new to the gym or are going to a new gym, you’ll want to look at the rules before you sign up. Most gyms have a dress code as part of their rules; this is in place to prevent injuries and to help everyone feel comfortable when they’re attending the gym. Each gym's dress code is often very similar, but it can vary, so always check with the specific gym you sign up for. We take a look at some of the common things you’ll find on a gym dress code so that you can prepare for your first workout.

No open-toe shoes

Most gyms have rules that involve footwear. One of these rules is that open-toe shoes are forbidden on the gym floor. Never turn up at the gym in sandals or flip-flops; you should have shoes that are suitable for working out. Trainers are the best option; make sure you choose some that are supportive and comfortable. This rule is in place to protect the people that attend the gym. Open-toe shoes are hazardous if you’re using weights; the weights could fall and land on your toes. Trainers will provide a layer of protection between your toes and the equipment.

Wear a top

Many gyms require male and female members to ensure they’re wearing a top that covers them. In other gyms, you might get away with wearing a sports bra as a woman or training with a vest shirt or no shirt on as a man. But for the most part, this isn’t recommended, especially if you’re new to the gym. Always wear clothing that covers you up, including a top and a sports bra if you’re a female. If you find after a few sessions at the gym that lots of other gym users only wear a sports bra and men wear very open-string tops, you’ll probably be fine, but it's always a good idea to check the dress code before you make any assumptions.

Appropriate gym clothing

Many gym dress codes don’t specify exactly what they want their members to wear; they simply state that members need to wear suitable gym clothing. Other gyms give guidelines about exactly what members can and cannot wear. Jeans, formal shirts and evening dresses generally don’t fit into the gym attire category. Leggings, a sports bra, a t-shirt and trainers are appropriate for female gym goers. For males, shorts or joggers and a t-shirt can be worn. Women can also wear shorts or joggers if they prefer them over gym leggings. The general rule is always choose something appropriate for working out.

Dirty clothing and shoes

At the gym, you’ll share the equipment with everyone else attending. Dirty clothing and muddy shoes won’t be welcome. You will probably get asked to leave most gyms if you turn up and your shoes are covered in mud, and so is your clothing. Think of others when going to the gym and keep a pair of trainers clean, so you always have something to wear. Never wear your gym shoes if you're planning a muddy walk with the dog unless you’re prepared to clean them before your next gym session.

Dress codes at the gym are simple enough; choose clothing appropriate for working out, clean items and nothing too revealing. If you follow this, you’re unlikely to go wrong. Some gyms also require you to carry a towel with you so you can wipe down any machinery after you’ve used it. To prevent embarrassment and being turned away on your first session, make sure you read all the gym rules before you turn up. You’re also likely to need a lock or change to use the lockers so you can secure your belongings in the changing room. It's worth finding out all of this before you go in for your first workout. If you can’t complete your first session because you don’t have the right gym clothing or accessories, it can be very frustrating and ruin the motivation you have for achieving your goals at the gym.
